Tribe One Urban Garden

Tribe One's Urban Garden serves to empower youth in becoming actively engaged in the beautification effort in East Knoxville. This program focuses on the holistic health of mind, body, and spirit through observing the natural world and learning about sustainability and nutrition. Students will take part in all aspects of the garden including, planting, learning about the growing process and the plants they are growing, harvesting the vegetables, and preparing healthy meals. The urban garden aims to connect students with their environment and community and to also have a healthy impact on their eating habits. This program is open to youth in grades 3-8.

Lessons we covered:

     - Farm to fork lesson: growing and harvesting cilantro to make our own fresh salsa.

     - Eating seasonally lesson: learning about what eating seasonally means, sampling local apples and making fresh apple juice.

     - Fall harvest: Pumpkin carving contest, and roasting pumpkin seeds.

     - Eat Your Greens Lesson: Students learned about the many types of edible green, participated in a salad scavenger hunt in the garden,
      and prepared fresh salad.

News and upcoming events

Tribe One partners with Earth Fare!

Tribe One was selected to be a friend of Earth Fare! Earth fare selects a local non-profit to help eliminate childhood obesity by providing and promoting kids health through physical activity, proper nutrition, cooking classes, store tours and food education. They donated many seeds to us for the garden, helped us stock our pantry and kitchen for cooking lessons and provided turkeys and food for our first Thanksgiving Day dinner, made by the kids from the after- school program! It was a great experience working with Mike and Liz at Earth Fare and we look forward to continuing our partnership!

Tribe One expands their urban garden

Tribe was chosen to be a site for Make A Difference Day a national volunteer service day. With the help of other CAC Americorps members and Beardsley Farm, we were able to get the garden up to it's growing capacity. We extended all of the raised beds, constructed a new raised bed, constructed a new compost bin, and prepared a new growing area. Thank you to everyone for all of their hard work!

Spring is coming!

The kids from the after school program are eager to start getting back in the garden. Check out some of the ideas we have for this spring!

- A garden mural workshop where kids will design and paint a mural for the garden

- Using our unique windows/ rooftop to make a mini greenhouse to start seeds

- Start a worm composting system

- Have a farm to table fundraiser dinner to support our after school program
